To Get Back At Al

Though Lauren Bush has a line of clothing and accessories in the works, unlike many of her fellow bold-faced colleagues, she isn’t looking to reap monetarily from the expansion in her portfolio. The niece of President Bush is working on an organic concept of lifestyle branding for which she will be the spokeswoman. Sounds kinda familiar. Maybe she's trying to make up for something lacking in the family. Her name, however, won’t appear on any labels it'll go something like this... at the Michael Kors show during Fashion Week in NYC, she was photographed carrying a burlap shoulder bag that read “Feed the Children of the World” on the side. “Each bag will feed a child in school for a year through the United Nations World Food Program,” said Bush, an ambassador of the cause, of the double-handled “Feed Bag” tote, which will go on sale at Amazon.com April 1. Product placement at it's finest.

Keep It Up

To make sure that everyone is still making there way to the gym and getting their bods fabulous and spring ready here's something you can pick up that I'm sure you'll love to sport at the gym. Yogini has created a genius yoga pants with built-in underwear. So now your concentration can be fully on your workout and not on what your thong is doing while you’re in down dog, sprinting on the treadmill, or just hanging out. I will admit I love comfy yoga pants even when I'm not working out. Come on, you know you do too.

You Can Definately Still Get Your Hands On This

Valentino’s a man of exacting tastes. Sadly, he can’t personally style us all, at least now you can reference his fashion commandments before you walk out the door. In the new issue of Details, on newsstands already, the maestro of old-school chic lays out his top 10 rules of style. I'm already trying to figure out where I can pick that up, any suggestions?

Sorry

Ok, I have been really sick for the past week and a half and all the while unpacking, going to school, and kinda working. But, it's no excuse!

Blast From The Past

I know I had the coolest lunchboxes in the first grade. Come on, who can top My Little Pony and Rainbow Brite? But, since I'm older now the plastic, picture covered food totes of the past just aren't going to suit my needs. But these updated versions from Built NY might be the most appropriate thing. They are made from the same material as a wetsuit, so it keeps your food fresh in any regard. Perfect for while you're dreading the run from the door to the deli just to grab overpriced grub from the food bar. You don't have to bother the healthy stuff came from home with you! Then when you get home, all you need to do is just toss it in the wash. Just like mom would have wanted...

For Westchester Ladies

Don't miss the first sample sale productions first ever Westchester event. Today from 11-9 and tomorrow from 10-4 at the White Plains Crowne Plaza (66 Hale Avenue.) This event boasts current styles of Prada, Gucci, Fendi, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Chloe, Balenciaga,

Unfortunately I have to work so, if you happen to go send me and e-mail and let me know how it was. Good shopping!

Founding Fathers

Head north to the promise land for plenty of sales this President's Day weekend and hit the rest of your faves on the way back down.

Random

The United Nations is notorious for its tight security as are most places in this great big city of ours. But, after months of negotiating Marie Claire finally persuaded the international organization to let down its guard in the name of fashion! Next month's issue will show the first time that any title has been allowed to do a fashion shoot in the halls of power. Fashions include embellished suits, jazzy patterns, and feminine takes on classic jackets. The fashion spread also includes a feature on the UN’s female rising stars who arm themselves with compassion and diplomacy and of course killer fashion.

Kooba Sale

If I tell you about nothing else this week I have to tell you about Kooba! There is a huge sample sale going on starting today and they will have a large selection of Kooba bags, as well as, some other stuff including Free People pieces. Now, you might be wondering why this sample sale merits it's own post when most of the time I clump them all together. I'll tell you why. #1 I'm running out the door and I don't have time to compile a list and #2 This sale is just that damn good! I went to the last one they had and picked up a coveted Ginger bag originally about $500 retail but, $250 at the sale. So if this is what you've been waiting for head over to 231 W. 36th St. (btwn. 7th & 8th) 2nd Floor. Today and Thurday until 7 PM and Wednesday and Friday until 6 PM, (wierd I dunno but that's the deal.)

Hallmark Holday: Part 3

If, the inexpensive gift doesn't work for your lady, you can try this beautiful necklace designed by none-other than model, humanitarian, and Ecoist Petra Nemcova. Although you might not know who that is your girl probably will. Petra's new pendants are almost indestructible. Made from silver or gold, the heart necklaces were designed by the supermodel for her Happy Hearts Fund, and 10 percent of all sales, naturally, go to the children’s charity. Though the charms may be reminiscent of Elsa Peretti’s collection, the silk cord allows them a little more versatility than the Tiffany line, plus the price is better. From, $95 to $395 at Fortunoff, 681 Fifth Ave., at 54th St.; 212-758-6660. I want this holiday or not...

Hallmark Holday: Part 2

Ok, I gave the boys a pretty inexpensive gift idea for the upcoming D-Day, I mean V-Day. Now, here's one for the girls... Show your man that he's the only one for you with some personalized panties by Blume. Beloved by celebs from J.Lo and Sarah Michelle to Britney and Paris, these skivvies will put fun behind your fly and a smile on your lips and if my thoughts are correct, someone else's as well.

You're Not Alone Diane!

Zac Posen is here to keep you company! Who needs Ken when you have a premier couture designer at your side in your Malibu convertible? You'll just have to cram his lush red headed model (sister, muse, and creative partner Alexandra) under your bed and he's all yours plus a handbag, shoes, and the Posen studio puppy, Tina. The studio “set” is crammed with bolts of fabric, sewing notions, bulletin board with pinned inspiration and must-have accessories. Of course, this Barbie costs more than her mass-market sisters (in that same way that Diane did) but with a stamp of approval from Vogue, that's to be expected. “Rarity is the new definition of luxury," and with just under 1000 units to sell that is truly the case.

It's Always Girls Night Out!

Another One?

Breaking news, Stella McCartney’s been bitten by the design collaborative bug and can't be stopped! The designer recently announced plans to design limited edition collections for LeSportsac, focusing on travel bags, luggage, and baby accessories that is set to launch in Spring 2008. “LeSportsac has a strong history in making iconic non-leather goods and this is a unique opportunity for Stella McCartney to address a new category of accessories for the busy woman of today,” said Marco Bizzarri, CEO and president of Stella McCartney. The lightweight and multi-purpose collections will incorporate innovative elements of design. Initially 30 to 40 styles will debut, with a bag averaging $200 to $250. The Stella McCartney for LeSportsac collection will be available in high-end department stores and specialty stores including Stella McCartney boutiques in London, New York, and Los Angeles, as well as, LeSportsac stores and website nationwide.

From Russia With Love

Are you so over your Uggs? I'm sorry I can't help you with that myself because I still love mine but perhaps Valenki can. The 300-year-old line of Russian footwear — originally used by peasants — is making a comeback. The boots, a cross between galoshes and the fuzzy sheepskin marvel, have removable rubber on the bottom and an inch to a quarter-inch of wool throughout, which means they could keep your feet warm even in Antarctic temperatures, or just NYC temps right now. Brrr... They come in all sizes and will match anything plus, if you want them a bit shorter, just take a knife and whack them down to size. How convenient!

Knit-story

You’ve probably never heard of Ohio Knitting Mills, a Cleveland-based company that was the source of sweaters for everyone from Pendleton to Saks. Especially since, the company closed several years ago. But, they left behind a collection of over 10,000 samples! Now, artist Steven Tatar has rescued them and opened an Ohio Knitting Mills in Brooklyn. He has enough to keep the store going for at least three years, but once the sweaters are gone, they’re gone so you'd better get going if you want a piece of that! And with prices from $68.00 it's a pretty affordable piece of history. Located at 231 Smith St. (nr. Butler St.) in Boerum Hill.

This Shit Will Be BANANAS

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Proenza Schouler is coming to Target and it's also coming to Opening Ceremony in SoHo. You know the deal already but here's a quick refresher : it's only for a limited time, features cool designs in bold colors like winter bustiers, even skinnier jeans, and too many other things to name and for all us new york fashion darlings are making their debut come tomorrow and only going till the 5th... got it? We all know how much you want it but unless you live in the 'burbs or one of the rapidly develpoing urban Target's it'll be out of reach after this. So be there! "There" meaning, 35 howard street @ broadway, from 11-8 or sunday from noon-7.

Be There

Starting today and going till Saturday only there is a sample sale to beat all sample sales going on (at least in my humble opinion). Rebecca and Drew makes these amazing shirts specifically designed for those with a more than ample bossom AKA me and even those with just a slightly ample bossom because all of us can fall victim to the third button pop... you know what I mean. So if you are in need of rescue, me again, then head over to 344 W. 13th St. (btwn. 8th Ave. & Hudson St.) from 11-7 and shop the amazing sized-by-bra-size button-front shirts. When they were $165-$230 and are now $20-$40 how can you go wrong!

It's Back...

Politicking And Fashion

It's all realted isn't it? Well, if it wasn't we can be sure that Robin Givhan wouldn't be as recognized as she is for all of her politically related fashion writing in the Washington Post. And now with all the announcements about the intentions of Kerry and Clinton, among others, to run in the 2008 elections it is ironic timing that Al Gore has some news of his own. No, he won't be running but he has created something that could very well help save the world! The eco-activist just inspired his first accessory, "The Friends of Al" tote by Hayden-Harnett. Designed in Brooklyn, the bag is made with all-natural cotton and printed with organic pigment instead of chemical ink. With every purchase, $25 goes to Gore's environmental foundation, Stop Global Warming. The bag also puts an end to cookie-cutter design: Its print was drawn by designer Toni Hayden especially for the project. He's an ecosit for sure!

Hallmark Holiday

For some reason the dreaded and fast approaching V-day has been on my mind. I suppose that I shouldn't be so set back by it considering I am in a very long term relationship with a wonderufl man but I can't help but remeber all those unpleasant single Valentine's Days that I spend dressed in black scorning all the happy couples. What to do, what to do? I'm not one of those hearts and cupids girls but at the same time I catch myself smiling at some of the less cheesy related items, like the project (RED) stuff at the GAP. Honestly, if I got nothing else for Valentines (massage, ahem, massage) I would want to be ADO(RED), TREASU(RED), and DESI(RED). How can someone whose ENAMO(RED) with you not want to show you that you are all those things and more?

She Did It Again

We all know how much I love Hollywould and I have to say if I had any need for the beautiflul clothes that she creates I would be all over this newest sale! Most of the time it's all about the shoes but she is putting her entire fall collection on sale at, that right you guessed it, insane discounts. This isn't just for any old night on the town, I'm talking some fancy shmancy stuff and normally it would break the bank but today it's within your reach!

Built Your Shoes

I know we all remeber Built By Wendy. If not shame on you, you haven't been keeping up with us. Her stuff is the epitome of shabby chic and so adorable. And now thanks to her newest creations you can be dressed literally from head to toe in Wendy's styles thanks to the addition of some sweet shoes to the collection. I am in love with the ankle bootie and I can't wait till they go on sale. They will be mine!

Back And Better Than Ever

Hello, everyone! I'm sorry for the lack of posting but I recently moved from the borough of Brooklyn to an old favorite, The Bronx. And, while I couldn't be happier about making the move to my old home the need for unpacking while living in box land is getting old quick. Thankfully the cable man came today and hooked me up so I'm all yours again and distracted from the immense task at hand. I have much to put up so keep an eye out for updates... I reccomend signing up with blogarithm.com using the button below my personal info, it will e-mail you when I have posted new stuff!

I Can't Wait

I got an e-mail from Neiman Marcus the other day and it made me so excited because although we are in the middle of winter (almost) everything is coming up roses. Spring, Summer, and Resort collecitons are what's on everybody's mind. And with all clothing, bags and shoes that are presented being meant for the warm weather I can't help but start planning my summer wardrobe. These Christian Louboutin's are pretty high up there on my list. I know there's going to be comfy, the style is quite unique, and they're out early enough they might go on sale before spring or summer actually comes. That's something to look forward to along with all the other early spring items.

For The Brooklyn Girls

If your looking for a new place to pick up fabulously unique looks in Brooklyn, I might have found a place for you! Fetije Madzuric, Brooklyn native and former fashion coordinator for stores like Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomingdale’s, has returned to her old neighborhood, bringing high-end lines back to the block. While working for other department stores, Madzuric didn’t have the opportunity to stock the up-and-coming, unique lines that now fill her simple, open space, YLLI (pronounced ee-lee) like Megyn Florence, Jesse Kamm, and Castle Starr. Also mixed alongside notables like Sass & Bide, Converse by John Varvatos, and Trovata and if your not just in it for the clothes, don't worry. Naturally there are a wide range of accessories by Brooklynites like Dirty Librarian Chains and Arms & Armory. Plus, you can find one-of-a-kind items that designers have created exclusively for the boutique, where, in addition to hosting open call days, Madzuric tries to throw at least two trunk shows or events a month. This new shopping spot offers a treasure trove of unique looks, I can't wait to check it out.

I Can't Wait...

Without Project Runway I really have no driving force to watch TV or DVR anything. That is until now, besides Season 4 of Runway, of course, there is a new show in the works for Bravo that profiles one of my favorites from Project Runway... that's right, Tim Gunn! Because Bravo's pulling the plug on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, after five seasons and four years on TV, they are looking to expand on old fav's like Gunn. His Guide to Style will profile him as he solves people's fashion dilemmas by helping them get makeovers. While it's still unresolved whether Gunn will return to Runway for its fourth season, his own show debuts as he is set to publish a book on style and taste in May 2007. I can't wait to watch him make it work!

Too Funny

Traffic is still being routed to the left lanes near the Taft Rd. exit (I have no idea where exactly this is the closest I can guess is Cincinnati) while crews continue to clean up the crash scene. What are they cleaning? Oil, fruit, clothes? No, fashion magazines are to blame for a big mess and traffic jams on I-71 Wednesday morning. Around 6:30 a.m., two semis crashed in the southbound lanes near Taft. One was hauling magazines, specifically, W, which were then strewn all over the highway. There are no reports of injuries. Southbound I-71 was like a giant parking lot, with at least a 40 minute delay from the Norwood Lateral into downtown. And all because of a absolutely fab publication.

Limon Knows

Finally

Some equal treatment for the girls in terms of overly techy iPod compatible fashions! It's not all for the boys... Because, who can get in the zone and keep their "lose the love handles" resoluntion sans up-to-the-minute Bose headphones? Everlast’s new dance pants and shorts have pockets that let you turn on without your iPod dropping out—just slip the cord through the tiny slot and zip up. Plus, the sleek, form-fitting fabric, made from a blend of Everdi poly and LYCRA, helps whisk moisture away, keeping you dry throughout your workout. The activewear has been spotted on everyone from Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby to professional NBA and NFL dancers—serious fitness fanatics only need apply.

Oh Please...

I look at this new Longchamp mini-tote that was released for the holiday season and think Fashion Week Daily's got it all wrong. Who cares if some lucky chicettes found it beneath their Christmas tree as they advise to "move away from those traditional bags with this unusual shape, while the tartan fabric, paired with a wide metal buckle, brightens up the season’s all-black ensembles." Chances are it will be on sale up at the outlet in Woodbury Commons is 6 months if not sooner.

Remeber Her?

Say hello to the Washington Post's Robin Givhan. If you don't remember her then shame on you. She was the 2006 Puitzer prize winner for criticism as the fashion editor for the Washington Post! How inspiring, it makes me think that I can achieve some serious greatness with my shopping hobby. Check out this interview from fishbowl DC:

How many suits do you own? One

What word do you routinely misspell? "Occasion." Or is it "occassion"? I can never remember.

Did you see Brokeback Mountain? Yep.

Did you see The Da Vinci Code? No, but I read the book, which probably explains why I didn't see the movie.

What's the name of your cell phone ring? "Boring Motorola ring"

What time did you get up this morning? Around 8am.

When did you last cry and why? I cry at Hallmark commercials, so I'm an easy mark. I cried the Tuesday after Thanksgiving when my parents finished their visit with me and went back to Michigan.

Which of the seven deadly sins are you? I try my best to avoid "pride" and whichever one led to Gwyneth's head being in that box.

Beach, city or country? All are nice, but if I could only have one it would have to be city.

Would you say you're cute? Pretty? Hot? Beautiful? Let's just say, "I make an effort."

What color is your bathroom? Aubergine.

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? too many to count, too many to remember.

What's your opinion of New York City? great personality, not much to look at.

What's your favorite letter? Scarlet

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? My mentor from graduate school Jack Lessenberry who made me cry on more than one occas(s)ion but who instilled the importance of accuracy and fearlessness.

Have you ever downloaded a podcast? If so, which one? Nope.

Who's your all-time favorite American Idol candidate? If I wanted to look like a talent scout I'd say Jennifer Hudson, but I was charmed by Chris Daughtry and his desperately straining vocal chords.

When's the last time you volunteered? Where? This summer at a high school journalism workshop.

Who is your favorite active journalist? I'm in awe of too many to name them all. Henry Allen is a poet. Gene Robinson is brilliant. Malcolm Gladwell can make a story about drying paint fascinating. Teri Agins is a fashion reporting goddess. Michael Specter can write about anything. Maureen Dowd has guts. I envy Frank Bruni's vocabulary.

What did you have for breakfast? A banana smoothie w/ soy protein and a cup of coffee.

What's your favorite item of clothing? At the moment, it's a Prada dress that I could happily wear every day and really should so that I can bring the cost-per-wearing ratio down to an acceptable level.

What one toiletry item could you not live without? uh, soap.

If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? mind-reading

Better role model: GIJoe? Barbie? Obviously, it's Barbie. She gets a raw deal because she cares about her appearance and so is dismissed as shallow. But she has had a multitude of satisfying careers, has worked for a wide variety of charities, has a wealth of friends, a great wardrobe and her own dream house.

Why?

The green shoes? O, yeah, I thought you'd all be curious. No, it wasn't a mistake when I was picking out the color for my Meez today I just happen to have bought the craziest green Juicy Couture pumps while I was at Woodbury Commons this weekend. I honestly don't know what came over me but when shoes call to me I listen... but not in the crazy I hear voices kinda way. In the end it was all for the best because these shoes ROCK! They're comfy, unique, and did I mention comfy? Well you get the point. Plus, they, as well as, my Spy compliment my Old Navy outfit of stylish frivolity very nicely.

For Serena

You'll be happy to know that continuing for another week (till the 15th) Nicole Miller’s fall collection is reduced by up to 70%. Now you have an excuse to get your shop on and two locations to do it at, 780 Madison Ave. (nr. 67th) or 77 Greene St. (nr. Spring).

I'll Tell You A Secret...

It's no secret that the Proenza Schouler line for Target is going to be one of the best ones in the GO:International lot. It is a secret, however, that the boys are going to launch the line with a pop-up store at Opening Ceremony on Howard St downtown on February 2nd. The secret sale will run for three days. But, you didn't hear it from me.

Project Runway Still

I know everyone is wondering what last season's winner, Jeffrey Sebelia, has been up to. Well, other than cuddling with Santino he has probably been celebrating the fact that his line Cosa Nostra is available for purchase online at Ron Herman and selling like hot cakes. The jacket from his season finale runway show has already sold out, and the final look dress can't far behind! This is my personal pick but unfortunately for me I'm not at the natural dress form point in my life quite yet...

What's Your Resolution?

I know what mine is but I have to say I can relate to Julia Stiles, "I’m in a transitional phase where I just finished college, so it’s my resolution to start dressing like I’m not in college anymore." Sometimes you can't resist the "I just rolled out of bed, threw on a hoodie and jeans, and ran to class" look. It's super comfy! But, keep checking She Spys The Buys, Julia, we can help you out...

Best Quote Ever

"If you're going to sleep for 100 years, you might as well do it in Dior." - Dakota Fanning on the Sleeping Beauty photo from her fairy tale photo shoot, styled by Karl Lagerfeld, in this month's Vanity Fair. They start so young!

Wish List: Wish 4

I know the holidays are over but there are still (as always) things that I'm hoping to get like this unbelivably amazing shoe organizer. With a room sized closet and a shameful amount of shoes it would come in handy! Who says I'm not practical about my obsession...

When I Grow Up

I want to be like Nan Kemper! Who is Nan Kemper you ask? Well she was an American fashion icon. Not a model or designer but a possessor of all things fashion, a clotheshorse if you will. Her closet, which was actually several converted bedrooms, was filled with stacks of 362 sweaters and 354 jackets; shelves for feathered fedoras, brimmed straws and other hats; and larger displays for Saint Laurents, Valentinos, Balmains and Gaultiers, some 3,000 garments and accessories in all. Apparently I not only need to work on being the Imelda Marcos of bags I need to work on being the next Nan Kemper of fashion. Too bad my body isn't a natural dress form. At 5'9 and 110 pounds Ms. Kemper was truly something else and she definately had the money to spend, coming from money and marrying money. So with all these obstacles to overcome I think I have a long road in front of me but that doesn't mean that I can't pay homage to the inspiration for my madness. Selections from her wardrobe will be on display at the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institue. Time for a field trip!!

It's Another "Styling" Phone

Prada is going wireless! The Italian fashion and accessories house has partnered with LG Electronics to develop an iconic mobile phone to be released in early 2007. Let's just hope it's not iconic like the Dolce and Gabbana RAZR... The first Prada telephone by LG will combine high-end technology with avant-garde design, for example, an advanced touch interface eliminates the conventional keypad. The initial launch is planned for distribution starting in Europe—first in Italy, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, followed by Asian locations such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. So baisically good luck being one of the first! “As we do with ready-to-wear and accessories, we were looking at a break-through,” said Patrizio Bertelli, president & CEO of Prada. I suppose we shall see.

Fashion Interview Of The Century

Just incase you missed it, here are some tidbits from the Anna Wintour /Barbara Walters interview just in case you missed it like yours truly. And if you don't want to read it you can just You Tube it...
  • Barbara Walters introducing Anna: “She could have been on our list most any year, but this year was tailor-made for her, since she was reputedly the inspiration for the hit film, The Devil Wears Prada. But whether it’s 2006 or any other year, fashion editor Anna Wintour seems always in Vogue."
Barbara’s voiceover: “In the world of fashion, everything changes, except for Anna Wintour and her power. For two decades, 57-year-old Anna Wintour has reigned over the Vogue magazine empire, making it the most profitable magazine of its kind, and developing three new magazines: Teen Vogue, Men’s Vogue, and Vogue Living.”

“We met at her New York office, where she and editor-at-large André Leon Talley were choosing photos for the January issue of Vogue featuring Angelina Jolie.”
Anna Wintour [to Walters and Talley, as well as Vogue fashion market/accessories director Virginia Smith and design director Charles Churchward]: “She loved this look, the jeans and the trench coat.”

BW: “Anna, you walk down the street, and everybody is wearing t-shirts and jeans. So, what’s fashion?”

AW: “Well, jeans and t-shirts can be equally as fashionable as an Oscar de la Renta ball gown.”

BW: “Do you think women are still interested in fashion?”

AW: “I think that they love fashion.”

Barbara’s voiceover: “Anna has been in love with fashion all her life. She was born in London, her father the editor of a major newspaper. She dropped out of school and got her first job at age 16. At age 25, she arrived in America, eventually landing the top job at Vogue. Along the way, she married, divorced, and raised two children. Two things seem to set her apart: her devotion to young designers and her signature look.”

BW: “At 15, you cut your hair like this, and never stopped. So how did you know this was the look? ’Cause it’s the Anna Wintour look.”

AW: “I’m sure it’s very boring and I should change, but every time I’ve tried it doesn’t work.”

Barbara’s voiceover: “Meryl Streep’s brilliant performance as a fashion editor in this year’s hit film, The Devil Wears Prada, was supposedly based on Anna.”

BW: “What’d you think of the film?”

AW: “I thought the film was really entertaining. I mean, anything that makes fashion entertaining and glamorous and interesting is wonderful for our industry. So I was 100 percent behind it.”

BW: “Did you recognize any of yourself?”

AW: “Well, I’m a very decisive person. I think it’s actually helpful to people you are working with if you can make decisions, so if Meryl seemed somewhat strong, I respect that.”

BW: “Is it true that the women who work at Vogue have to be particularly stylish, no jeans?”

AW: “Well, hopefully everyone who works there loves fashion. We expect, we don’t dictate, a certain style of dress.”

BW: “Anna, does the mood of the country affect fashion?”

AW: “Absolutely, it affects fashion. We were so interested at Vogue to see how militant many of the collections were.”

    BW: “Because of the war?”

AW: “Because of the war. There was a real sense that the women on the runways were going into battle. Since the election results in November, talking to many of the designers I feel they’re now so optimistic and thrilled at the idea of change and possible withdrawal from Iraq. So that’s going to be on the runways next September.”

BW: “So if I were really smart and I looked at Vogue, I would be able to tell what the mood of the country was.”

  • AW: “I believe so.”

What A Crazy Bastard!!!

"I know I'm in a room of sinners tonight," the Reverend Billy declared onstage at Cooper Union Sunday evening, moments before selecting a young woman named Zoey as a candidate for exorcism. Zoey, you see, was guilty of having a credit card. Have card, will shop... and that's just the sin Reverend Billy is trying to prevent. Backed by his Not-Buying-It Band and the 30-voice Stop-Shopping Gospel Choir, the reverend and his crew performed gospel-style songs with lyrics like "We're gonna put those Nikes down / and we'll stop shopping" as part of his "Stop the Shopacalypse" show. The event included a gift swap, audience members were instructed to bring a present found in the back of their closets for other showgoers to then use as gifts, and he also conferred sainthood on three members of "Good Ol' Lower East Side," a neighborhood conservation organization. In a riff on both consumer culture and right-wing bible-thumpers, downtown performing artist Bill Talen slips into a priest costume, the white collar he wears around his neck was purchased at a religious-supply store, to create the Reverend Billy, an almost televangelist. Talen was reborn as Billy about a decade ago, while he was living in Hell's Kitchen. Horrified by what he calls "the Disney-ification of Times Square," Talen hit the streets back then to denounce Mickey Mouse as the Antichrist. Today, his movement has grown to include events such as Buy-Nothing Day, considered by Talen to be "the high holy day" of his unique theological calendar. To celebrate last Buy-Nothing Day, a group protested in front of Macy's while a simultaneous "Traffic Jamming" session set up near the gridlocked traffic at the mouth of the Lincoln Tunnel. Sunday's East Village crowd was into it, all joining hands to direct their collective energy toward that exorcism. And for a moment, someplace, perhaps a cash register stopped ringing. -- New York Magazine

Vouge

The Material Girl is taking her love of cheap chic one step further with H&M, collaborating with them to launch “M by Madonna,” a limited-edition, one-time collection of garments and accessories that will debut in March. The 30-piece collection, consisting of tailored dresses and tops with feminine, modern, and narrow silhouette, will be available along with the 10 or so matching accessories in H&M’s more than 1,300 stores worldwide, unlike the company’s past three designer collaborations which were only sold at top flagship stores in key cities. According to a company spokesperson, prices for the “M by Madonna” collection will be similar to the rest of the H&M seasonal collections and the pieces will reflect her “unique, timeless, and glamorous style.” “I’ve made no secret of my love of fashion over the years,” the 42-year-old singer, author, and cultural phenomenon said in a statement. “Working with... H&M was an exciting and new creative challenge for me. I’m really happy with the results and look forward to wearing ‘M by Madonna’ along with the rest of the world.” Based on the sketches that I saw of the looks I can imagine that this line has much more potential than her limited edition track suit, at least I hope.

They're Here

Just so you know the L.A.M.B. line of purses and wallets is available for purchase! Check it out...

It's That Time of Year

Ugg Australia is holding their yearly Art & Sole auction. This annual event raises tens of thousands of dollars all to benefits St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Baiscally, it's like the NEDA auction, but instead of a variety of items up for auction things up on the internet block are boots. Don't worry these are special boots as you can see, hand painted by various celebrities. So, if you are intersted in owning a little piece of Alexis Bledel, Ashton Kutcher, Terri Hatcher, or Betsey Johnson, to name a few, bid now. My favorite, I'm ashamed to say is Jessica Simpson. But regardless, if I was a size 6 those boots would be mine!

Set Your TiVo!

What does Anna Wintour have in common with televangelist Joel Osteen and Grey’s Anatomy Patrick Dempsey? I didn't know either till I found out that all three are included in Barbara Walters’ list of the 10 most fascinating people of 2006. Others include Andre Agassi, John Ramsey, and Terri Irwin. I wonder who the #1 person is? You'll have to make sure to watch December 12 at 10:00 p.m. on ABC.

And since then I have had my eye on an authentic Juicy sweatshirt, especially after trying one on and feeling the wonderous warth and cozyness. Too bad the price is so steep but, hey it is the season of giving.

Shopping For A Cause

Well, you all now know about Spoonfed Art and designer Karin Collins. But, I have just received word that Ms. Collins has donated some of her one of a kind jewelry to be sold in a charity auction benefiting the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). Her special NEDA logo pendant is the number one item on the list beating out a Marc Jacobs Venetia bag and Sara Evans concert tickets. Get in there people and bid, it's for a good cause!

1990-Something

While browsing through e-mails I got a notice about some new revolutionary pieces of jewelry. Now, we all know how I am about the bling so of course I started to browse. And as I was admiring the cute, handmade designs I was moved to perhaps purchse on of these cute bracelets. Until, that is, I looked at the price. I know Lacquerite is innovative, forward fashion worked entirely by hand that originated with Molly Jackson and which utilize revolutionary liquid polymers from a company pioneering progressive "green technologies". But Artisan produced or not they don't seem like they are worth the hefty $285.00 that is being charged. They look like slap braclets! Hmmm... maybe I would change my mind if I tried one on but that'll probably never happen since I'm not going to shell out the dough. If anyone gets to try one on let me know how it is.

Weekend Of Thanks

If your still at home looking for something to do stop by one of Plaza Too's various locations and enjoy some baked goodies and shopping, of course! I'll be stopping by one of them because ever since I worked down the block from the one in Bronxville I've been hooked.

Not So Affordable Capsule Collection

The Tom Dixon for Lacoste polo shirts. Industrial-chic takes on the classic shirt with an eye on technology and functionality (and of course fashion) Take your pick from four limited edition styles, each complete with Tom Dixon-designed packaging. There’s the rough-edged, indigo Eco polo ($198) made of organic cotton and packaged in an egg carton-like recycled box; the Techno polo ($198), a steel-colored ode to Lacoste’s performance and durability in a hi-tech lurex weave, vacuum-sealed in aluminum foil. Both of these designs will be sold at select Lacoste stores. Check the website for details, it's a little too trippy for me... stupid bouncing preppy people. These shirt's souped-up cousins are the Eco polo+ and the Techno polo+ ($255). A mere 1,000 of the + versions will be sold exclusively at Jeffreys ( 449 W. 14th St.), so whether you want it as a gift, a collector’s item, a work of art, or simply a new reason to take up tennis, move fast!

Lord Help Us...

What do you get if you cross Jennifer Lopez with Posh Spice? I'm not sure but, apparently we're soon to find out, because the two pop star-turned-designers became new BFF's when they met at Tom Cruise's wedding last weekend. "Jennifer thought Victoria was a real character and very much hopes they can stay friends now they have met." Apparently J-Lo thinks the pair could be capable of developing a seriously sexy range and Posh, who once claimed never to have read a whole book, also apparently helped J-Lo with a few script writing tips since she is in the process of writing a couple of films, one of which is a real chick flick about two sisters who get separated at birth but are later reunited (really original)... I'm worried, honestly.

For The Ecoist Peoples...

Here's another way to shop it up while still being on of the Planeteers! A little birdie told me about a line of solar-powered bags made by Reware. I jest not. These bags come in different designs (backpack, daypack, messenger bags) and colors so you can find the perfect fit but here's the prestige each one is equipped with thin-film solar panels of 52 micro-solar cells that generate 7 watts of raw sun power to charge up any 12-volt electronic device (i.e. your cell-phone, PDA, ipod, digital camera, etc) Finally I can unattach myself from my car chargers! And in true Ecoist fashion these bags are made from shredded plastic soda bottles. With an extra solar powered battery you can even keep your laptop going! Check it out and then start planning your next vacation off the grid or your everyday running around the city...

Gap Doesn't Know When To Stop

Just when you've finally recovered from the fashionista frenzy that was the unveiling of Viktor & Rolf's designs for H&M, another cheap and cheerful collaboration is hitting stores nationwide. This time, it's celebrity favorite Roland Mouret, whose capsule dress collection for the Gap is sure to have us setting our alarms extra early come December 1. Although, I'll be at Saks first though, picking up my L.A.M.B! Mouret's dresses are classics with a twist, including a pitch-perfect A-line, short-sleeve minidress (ideal for layering), and a festive, crimson, bell-sleeve tunic, the proceeds from which will benefit Bono's charitable brainchild Product RED. I can't wait, because I love shopping for a cause other than my closet.

Payless Does It Again...

Abaeté has come and gone and Payless is celebrating the success of that endeavor but not before delving into another. Lela Rose’s sweet and feminine designs, may fetch up to $2,100, but come February, her stuffs will be affordable for all thanks to a design collaboration with Payless announced this week. Rose will create Lela Rose for Payless, a line of original footwear and accessory designs that will be unveiled at her Fall 2007 runway show next February during fashion week. Matt Rubel, CEO of Payless ShoeSource and a veteran of Cole Haan says "we look forward to celebrating her design esthetic and bringing it to women across America with the Lela Rose for Payless collections available only at Payless.” Subtlety is not neccessary! Also noted was the fact that the contract also includes a holiday 2007 collection that will debut in November next year. “Every woman knows that a good shoe is hard to find, especially one that is affordable with impeccable quality and design,” said Rose. “That’s the goal of this alliance" And as we all know Payless’ approach in converging mass and class isn’t new. Nine West trumped their collaborations with Thakoon, Sophia Kokosalaki, and Vivienne Westwood, and H&M gained an entirely new audience thanks to its partnerships with Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, and Viktor & Rolf. And let's not forget about Target and their Go: International lines... This can only mean more good things for Payless and us!

Super Comfy

Karmaloop is one of the places on the great wide internet that you can get Harajuku Lovers stuff, for regular retail or on sale. Right now they have one of the comfiest sweatshirts I have ever worn in great new colors plus, of course, cute stuff on sale. It could be a great holiday gift. But, I know it's going to end up in your closet... you can't resist the comfy!

Gap Is At It Again

With the launch of their new shop, Piperlime! As if clothes, bags, fragrances, sunglasses, and even home goods weren't enough Gap Inc. felt the need to expand into shoes as well. Now, I know your thinking that they sell shoes in store. But, I'm not talking about Gap, Old Navy, or Banana Republic shoes. I'm talking about brands like Hollywould, Betsy Johnson, Delman, Charles David, Frye, Tahari, and many more. There is a wide selection of items and the site it pretty easy to navigate so get your shop on.

Jewelry To Make You Laugh

I had to post this... too funny. As someone who does not own a piece of Chanel fabulousness I suppose it's more amusing. Maybe when I finally find somehting I like (and can afford) this will be too bittersweet to laugh But, now it's all good.

Speaking of Jewelry

I know I have mentioned Carnelian Knoll and Julie Sigmund before but, since the Holiday Shops in Bryant Park opened Saturday, November 18 (while your there take a spin in the free skating rink) and the Union Square Holiday Market opened yesterday I figured it would be good to remind everyone that she will be there selling her beautiful jewelry. In Bryant Park the booth (F8) is located in the center of the Park between the skating rink and the library. That fair is open daily through New Year’s Eve (Monday-Friday 11- 8, Saturday 10-9, Sunday 10-6) The Union Square Holiday Market is open through Christmas Eve. (Monday-Friday 11-8, Saturday 10-8 PM, Sunday 11-7) Location details will be posted on the Carnelian Knoll website. This year, there is a growing selection of earrings in the $18-$25 range that are ideal for office gifts, secret Santas, and stocking stuffers. And a little bonus for all the insiders... shop now through November 30th and Julie will take 5% off any purchase or 10% off all purchases over $100 when you present a copy of her special e-mail notice. If you want a copy, e-mail me and I will forward it to you!

Wish LIst: Wish 1

I am in love with these earring. Again, I'm not exactly sure why I'm having unprecedented attractions to unlikely things but, I am. Hmmm... maybe a good stocking stuffer (wink wink, nudge nudge) It's hit a new level of craziness I am spying my own gifts!

Shoes, Shoes, and More Shoes

I don't really think that I need anymore shoes but that doesn't mean I should deprive those who might have a little more space in their closet to fill. Right now Smart Bargains is having a $49.99 sale on a few choice desginers. Take your pick, I'm sure you'll be able to find something.

Review Time

I know your all wondering how the midnight madness went at the mall. Well, because I was suffering from severe tryptophan poisoning I ended up just passing out when I got back to my place. Shame on me! But, I redeemed myself by waking up the next morning bright and early and heading up there with renewed enthusiam and sugar so I didn't fall asleep again. I can't even imagine how crazy it must have been at midnight because when I got there at 9 in the AM it was pretty extreme. There was no more space in the valet parking, there were state troopers everywhere, and I had to drive around forever and block off an entire lane of cars just to get a parking space that I had been waiting for before someone tried to steal it. The best musing about the experience had to be from my brother while we waited on the hour long line to get into the Coach outlet. He said that nothing was worth waiting on a line that long except a roller coaster at Six Flags. I beg to differ. In the end I got some gifts for people on my list as well as some t's at Juicy Couture for myself (tee hee). Next year I'm not eating Thanksgiving dinner, I'm just drinking coffee and heading up there for the madness.
