When I Grow Up

I want to be like Nan Kemper! Who is Nan Kemper you ask? Well she was an American fashion icon. Not a model or designer but a possessor of all things fashion, a clotheshorse if you will. Her closet, which was actually several converted bedrooms, was filled with stacks of 362 sweaters and 354 jackets; shelves for feathered fedoras, brimmed straws and other hats; and larger displays for Saint Laurents, Valentinos, Balmains and Gaultiers, some 3,000 garments and accessories in all. Apparently I not only need to work on being the Imelda Marcos of bags I need to work on being the next Nan Kemper of fashion. Too bad my body isn't a natural dress form. At 5'9 and 110 pounds Ms. Kemper was truly something else and she definately had the money to spend, coming from money and marrying money. So with all these obstacles to overcome I think I have a long road in front of me but that doesn't mean that I can't pay homage to the inspiration for my madness. Selections from her wardrobe will be on display at the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institue. Time for a field trip!!

It's Another "Styling" Phone

Prada is going wireless! The Italian fashion and accessories house has partnered with LG Electronics to develop an iconic mobile phone to be released in early 2007. Let's just hope it's not iconic like the Dolce and Gabbana RAZR... The first Prada telephone by LG will combine high-end technology with avant-garde design, for example, an advanced touch interface eliminates the conventional keypad. The initial launch is planned for distribution starting in Europe—first in Italy, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, followed by Asian locations such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. So baisically good luck being one of the first! “As we do with ready-to-wear and accessories, we were looking at a break-through,” said Patrizio Bertelli, president & CEO of Prada. I suppose we shall see.

Fashion Interview Of The Century

Just incase you missed it, here are some tidbits from the Anna Wintour /Barbara Walters interview just in case you missed it like yours truly. And if you don't want to read it you can just You Tube it...
  • Barbara Walters introducing Anna: “She could have been on our list most any year, but this year was tailor-made for her, since she was reputedly the inspiration for the hit film, The Devil Wears Prada. But whether it’s 2006 or any other year, fashion editor Anna Wintour seems always in Vogue."
Barbara’s voiceover: “In the world of fashion, everything changes, except for Anna Wintour and her power. For two decades, 57-year-old Anna Wintour has reigned over the Vogue magazine empire, making it the most profitable magazine of its kind, and developing three new magazines: Teen Vogue, Men’s Vogue, and Vogue Living.”

“We met at her New York office, where she and editor-at-large AndrĂ© Leon Talley were choosing photos for the January issue of Vogue featuring Angelina Jolie.”
Anna Wintour [to Walters and Talley, as well as Vogue fashion market/accessories director Virginia Smith and design director Charles Churchward]: “She loved this look, the jeans and the trench coat.”

BW: “Anna, you walk down the street, and everybody is wearing t-shirts and jeans. So, what’s fashion?”

AW: “Well, jeans and t-shirts can be equally as fashionable as an Oscar de la Renta ball gown.”

BW: “Do you think women are still interested in fashion?”

AW: “I think that they love fashion.”

Barbara’s voiceover: “Anna has been in love with fashion all her life. She was born in London, her father the editor of a major newspaper. She dropped out of school and got her first job at age 16. At age 25, she arrived in America, eventually landing the top job at Vogue. Along the way, she married, divorced, and raised two children. Two things seem to set her apart: her devotion to young designers and her signature look.”

BW: “At 15, you cut your hair like this, and never stopped. So how did you know this was the look? ’Cause it’s the Anna Wintour look.”

AW: “I’m sure it’s very boring and I should change, but every time I’ve tried it doesn’t work.”

Barbara’s voiceover:Meryl Streep’s brilliant performance as a fashion editor in this year’s hit film, The Devil Wears Prada, was supposedly based on Anna.”

BW: “What’d you think of the film?”

AW: “I thought the film was really entertaining. I mean, anything that makes fashion entertaining and glamorous and interesting is wonderful for our industry. So I was 100 percent behind it.”

BW: “Did you recognize any of yourself?”

AW: “Well, I’m a very decisive person. I think it’s actually helpful to people you are working with if you can make decisions, so if Meryl seemed somewhat strong, I respect that.”

BW: “Is it true that the women who work at Vogue have to be particularly stylish, no jeans?”

AW: “Well, hopefully everyone who works there loves fashion. We expect, we don’t dictate, a certain style of dress.”

BW: “Anna, does the mood of the country affect fashion?”

AW: “Absolutely, it affects fashion. We were so interested at Vogue to see how militant many of the collections were.”

    BW: “Because of the war?”

AW: “Because of the war. There was a real sense that the women on the runways were going into battle. Since the election results in November, talking to many of the designers I feel they’re now so optimistic and thrilled at the idea of change and possible withdrawal from Iraq. So that’s going to be on the runways next September.”

BW: “So if I were really smart and I looked at Vogue, I would be able to tell what the mood of the country was.”

  • AW: “I believe so.”

What A Crazy Bastard!!!

"I know I'm in a room of sinners tonight," the Reverend Billy declared onstage at Cooper Union Sunday evening, moments before selecting a young woman named Zoey as a candidate for exorcism. Zoey, you see, was guilty of having a credit card. Have card, will shop... and that's just the sin Reverend Billy is trying to prevent. Backed by his Not-Buying-It Band and the 30-voice Stop-Shopping Gospel Choir, the reverend and his crew performed gospel-style songs with lyrics like "We're gonna put those Nikes down / and we'll stop shopping" as part of his "Stop the Shopacalypse" show. The event included a gift swap, audience members were instructed to bring a present found in the back of their closets for other showgoers to then use as gifts, and he also conferred sainthood on three members of "Good Ol' Lower East Side," a neighborhood conservation organization. In a riff on both consumer culture and right-wing bible-thumpers, downtown performing artist Bill Talen slips into a priest costume, the white collar he wears around his neck was purchased at a religious-supply store, to create the Reverend Billy, an almost televangelist. Talen was reborn as Billy about a decade ago, while he was living in Hell's Kitchen. Horrified by what he calls "the Disney-ification of Times Square," Talen hit the streets back then to denounce Mickey Mouse as the Antichrist. Today, his movement has grown to include events such as Buy-Nothing Day, considered by Talen to be "the high holy day" of his unique theological calendar. To celebrate last Buy-Nothing Day, a group protested in front of Macy's while a simultaneous "Traffic Jamming" session set up near the gridlocked traffic at the mouth of the Lincoln Tunnel. Sunday's East Village crowd was into it, all joining hands to direct their collective energy toward that exorcism. And for a moment, someplace, perhaps a cash register stopped ringing. -- New York Magazine

Vouge

The Material Girl is taking her love of cheap chic one step further with H&M, collaborating with them to launch “M by Madonna,” a limited-edition, one-time collection of garments and accessories that will debut in March. The 30-piece collection, consisting of tailored dresses and tops with feminine, modern, and narrow silhouette, will be available along with the 10 or so matching accessories in H&M’s more than 1,300 stores worldwide, unlike the company’s past three designer collaborations which were only sold at top flagship stores in key cities. According to a company spokesperson, prices for the “M by Madonna” collection will be similar to the rest of the H&M seasonal collections and the pieces will reflect her “unique, timeless, and glamorous style.” “I’ve made no secret of my love of fashion over the years,” the 42-year-old singer, author, and cultural phenomenon said in a statement. “Working with... H&M was an exciting and new creative challenge for me. I’m really happy with the results and look forward to wearing ‘M by Madonna’ along with the rest of the world.” Based on the sketches that I saw of the looks I can imagine that this line has much more potential than her limited edition track suit, at least I hope.

They're Here

Just so you know the L.A.M.B. line of purses and wallets is available for purchase! Check it out...

It's That Time of Year

Ugg Australia is holding their yearly Art & Sole auction. This annual event raises tens of thousands of dollars all to benefits St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Baiscally, it's like the NEDA auction, but instead of a variety of items up for auction things up on the internet block are boots. Don't worry these are special boots as you can see, hand painted by various celebrities. So, if you are intersted in owning a little piece of Alexis Bledel, Ashton Kutcher, Terri Hatcher, or Betsey Johnson, to name a few, bid now. My favorite, I'm ashamed to say is Jessica Simpson. But regardless, if I was a size 6 those boots would be mine!

Set Your TiVo!

What does Anna Wintour have in common with televangelist Joel Osteen and Grey’s Anatomy Patrick Dempsey? I didn't know either till I found out that all three are included in Barbara Walters’ list of the 10 most fascinating people of 2006. Others include Andre Agassi, John Ramsey, and Terri Irwin. I wonder who the #1 person is? You'll have to make sure to watch December 12 at 10:00 p.m. on ABC.

But hurry it's only going to be up until the end of the holiday season...

If you don't believe me I will send you an image of what they look like without the clip on, just e-mail me. And then you will have a way to justify the cost, with it being two boots in one and all.

Go For Me And Have A Fabulous Time!!!

Wish List: Wish 3

I bought one of these off of e-Bay a year ago and unfourtunatly for nieve me it wasn't authentic. What a shocker! And since then I have had my eye on an authentic Juicy sweatshirt, especially after trying one on and feeling the wonderous warth and cozyness. Too bad the price is so steep but, hey it is the season of giving.

Shopping For A Cause

Well, you all now know about Spoonfed Art and designer Karin Collins. But, I have just received word that Ms. Collins has donated some of her one of a kind jewelry to be sold in a charity auction benefiting the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). Her special NEDA logo pendant is the number one item on the list beating out a Marc Jacobs Venetia bag and Sara Evans concert tickets. Get in there people and bid, it's for a good cause!

1990-Something

While browsing through e-mails I got a notice about some new revolutionary pieces of jewelry. Now, we all know how I am about the bling so of course I started to browse. And as I was admiring the cute, handmade designs I was moved to perhaps purchse on of these cute bracelets. Until, that is, I looked at the price. I know Lacquerite is innovative, forward fashion worked entirely by hand that originated with Molly Jackson and which utilize revolutionary liquid polymers from a company pioneering progressive "green technologies". But Artisan produced or not they don't seem like they are worth the hefty $285.00 that is being charged. They look like slap braclets! Hmmm... maybe I would change my mind if I tried one on but that'll probably never happen since I'm not going to shell out the dough. If anyone gets to try one on let me know how it is.

Weekend Of Thanks

If your still at home looking for something to do stop by one of Plaza Too's various locations and enjoy some baked goodies and shopping, of course! I'll be stopping by one of them because ever since I worked down the block from the one in Bronxville I've been hooked.

Not So Affordable Capsule Collection

The Tom Dixon for Lacoste polo shirts. Industrial-chic takes on the classic shirt with an eye on technology and functionality (and of course fashion) Take your pick from four limited edition styles, each complete with Tom Dixon-designed packaging. There’s the rough-edged, indigo Eco polo ($198) made of organic cotton and packaged in an egg carton-like recycled box; the Techno polo ($198), a steel-colored ode to Lacoste’s performance and durability in a hi-tech lurex weave, vacuum-sealed in aluminum foil. Both of these designs will be sold at select Lacoste stores. Check the website for details, it's a little too trippy for me... stupid bouncing preppy people. These shirt's souped-up cousins are the Eco polo+ and the Techno polo+ ($255). A mere 1,000 of the + versions will be sold exclusively at Jeffreys ( 449 W. 14th St.), so whether you want it as a gift, a collector’s item, a work of art, or simply a new reason to take up tennis, move fast!

Lord Help Us...

What do you get if you cross Jennifer Lopez with Posh Spice? I'm not sure but, apparently we're soon to find out, because the two pop star-turned-designers became new BFF's when they met at Tom Cruise's wedding last weekend. "Jennifer thought Victoria was a real character and very much hopes they can stay friends now they have met." Apparently J-Lo thinks the pair could be capable of developing a seriously sexy range and Posh, who once claimed never to have read a whole book, also apparently helped J-Lo with a few script writing tips since she is in the process of writing a couple of films, one of which is a real chick flick about two sisters who get separated at birth but are later reunited (really original)... I'm worried, honestly.

For The Ecoist Peoples...

Here's another way to shop it up while still being on of the Planeteers! A little birdie told me about a line of solar-powered bags made by Reware. I jest not. These bags come in different designs (backpack, daypack, messenger bags) and colors so you can find the perfect fit but here's the prestige each one is equipped with thin-film solar panels of 52 micro-solar cells that generate 7 watts of raw sun power to charge up any 12-volt electronic device (i.e. your cell-phone, PDA, ipod, digital camera, etc) Finally I can unattach myself from my car chargers! And in true Ecoist fashion these bags are made from shredded plastic soda bottles. With an extra solar powered battery you can even keep your laptop going! Check it out and then start planning your next vacation off the grid or your everyday running around the city...

Gap Doesn't Know When To Stop

Just when you've finally recovered from the fashionista frenzy that was the unveiling of Viktor & Rolf's designs for H&M, another cheap and cheerful collaboration is hitting stores nationwide. This time, it's celebrity favorite Roland Mouret, whose capsule dress collection for the Gap is sure to have us setting our alarms extra early come December 1. Although, I'll be at Saks first though, picking up my L.A.M.B! Mouret's dresses are classics with a twist, including a pitch-perfect A-line, short-sleeve minidress (ideal for layering), and a festive, crimson, bell-sleeve tunic, the proceeds from which will benefit Bono's charitable brainchild Product RED. I can't wait, because I love shopping for a cause other than my closet.

Payless Does It Again...

AbaetĂ© has come and gone and Payless is celebrating the success of that endeavor but not before delving into another. Lela Rose’s sweet and feminine designs, may fetch up to $2,100, but come February, her stuffs will be affordable for all thanks to a design collaboration with Payless announced this week. Rose will create Lela Rose for Payless, a line of original footwear and accessory designs that will be unveiled at her Fall 2007 runway show next February during fashion week. Matt Rubel, CEO of Payless ShoeSource and a veteran of Cole Haan says "we look forward to celebrating her design esthetic and bringing it to women across America with the Lela Rose for Payless collections available only at Payless.” Subtlety is not neccessary! Also noted was the fact that the contract also includes a holiday 2007 collection that will debut in November next year. “Every woman knows that a good shoe is hard to find, especially one that is affordable with impeccable quality and design,” said Rose. “That’s the goal of this alliance" And as we all know Payless’ approach in converging mass and class isn’t new. Nine West trumped their collaborations with Thakoon, Sophia Kokosalaki, and Vivienne Westwood, and H&M gained an entirely new audience thanks to its partnerships with Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, and Viktor & Rolf. And let's not forget about Target and their Go: International lines... This can only mean more good things for Payless and us!

Super Comfy

Karmaloop is one of the places on the great wide internet that you can get Harajuku Lovers stuff, for regular retail or on sale. Right now they have one of the comfiest sweatshirts I have ever worn in great new colors plus, of course, cute stuff on sale. It could be a great holiday gift. But, I know it's going to end up in your closet... you can't resist the comfy!

Gap Is At It Again

With the launch of their new shop, Piperlime! As if clothes, bags, fragrances, sunglasses, and even home goods weren't enough Gap Inc. felt the need to expand into shoes as well. Now, I know your thinking that they sell shoes in store. But, I'm not talking about Gap, Old Navy, or Banana Republic shoes. I'm talking about brands like Hollywould, Betsy Johnson, Delman, Charles David, Frye, Tahari, and many more. There is a wide selection of items and the site it pretty easy to navigate so get your shop on.

Jewelry To Make You Laugh

I had to post this... too funny. As someone who does not own a piece of Chanel fabulousness I suppose it's more amusing. Maybe when I finally find somehting I like (and can afford) this will be too bittersweet to laugh But, now it's all good.

Speaking of Jewelry

I know I have mentioned Carnelian Knoll and Julie Sigmund before but, since the Holiday Shops in Bryant Park opened Saturday, November 18 (while your there take a spin in the free skating rink) and the Union Square Holiday Market opened yesterday I figured it would be good to remind everyone that she will be there selling her beautiful jewelry. In Bryant Park the booth (F8) is located in the center of the Park between the skating rink and the library. That fair is open daily through New Year’s Eve (Monday-Friday 11- 8, Saturday 10-9, Sunday 10-6) The Union Square Holiday Market is open through Christmas Eve. (Monday-Friday 11-8, Saturday 10-8 PM, Sunday 11-7) Location details will be posted on the Carnelian Knoll website. This year, there is a growing selection of earrings in the $18-$25 range that are ideal for office gifts, secret Santas, and stocking stuffers. And a little bonus for all the insiders... shop now through November 30th and Julie will take 5% off any purchase or 10% off all purchases over $100 when you present a copy of her special e-mail notice. If you want a copy, e-mail me and I will forward it to you!

Wish LIst: Wish 1

I am in love with these earring. Again, I'm not exactly sure why I'm having unprecedented attractions to unlikely things but, I am. Hmmm... maybe a good stocking stuffer (wink wink, nudge nudge) It's hit a new level of craziness I am spying my own gifts!

Shoes, Shoes, and More Shoes

I don't really think that I need anymore shoes but that doesn't mean I should deprive those who might have a little more space in their closet to fill. Right now Smart Bargains is having a $49.99 sale on a few choice desginers. Take your pick, I'm sure you'll be able to find something.

Review Time

I know your all wondering how the midnight madness went at the mall. Well, because I was suffering from severe tryptophan poisoning I ended up just passing out when I got back to my place. Shame on me! But, I redeemed myself by waking up the next morning bright and early and heading up there with renewed enthusiam and sugar so I didn't fall asleep again. I can't even imagine how crazy it must have been at midnight because when I got there at 9 in the AM it was pretty extreme. There was no more space in the valet parking, there were state troopers everywhere, and I had to drive around forever and block off an entire lane of cars just to get a parking space that I had been waiting for before someone tried to steal it. The best musing about the experience had to be from my brother while we waited on the hour long line to get into the Coach outlet. He said that nothing was worth waiting on a line that long except a roller coaster at Six Flags. I beg to differ. In the end I got some gifts for people on my list as well as some t's at Juicy Couture for myself (tee hee). Next year I'm not eating Thanksgiving dinner, I'm just drinking coffee and heading up there for the madness.

Strange Attraction

I want this bag. I'm not exactly sure why but I do and it's on sale so I guess it's a go. Oddly enough, it's not the first bag or clutch that I have seen recently at the Gap that I have been attracted to. And, as you can see when you click the link they really are stepping it up in terms of the price. I suppose that genuine leather will always cost but I'm hoping that the quality of construction will match the chosen materials...

High-End Personal Shopper

As much as I love to shop it would be a relief if this year I did not have to go through the extreme effort of finding the perfect gift for everyone on my list. Santa Iris gets tierd people! If your in the same boat you should check out the Neiman Marcus website. Right now they have a holiday shopping guide so you can find the perfect gift for "the traveler," "the diva," "the happy family," etc. The only probelm is you might get distracted picking things out for yourself but, it's a risk I'm willing to take. And if you want to make the whole experience even simpler you can shop the 10 best gift ideas and narrow the field.

Beautiful Day

There is a new Sephora opening tomorrow on 57th and Lex. Stop by if you have the time they might be having give aways and such. Maybe you'll get a look at the new Monopoly while your at it...

So SICK!

In a good way... Threadless.com is having a holiday $10 sale. Sounds great but there is more! This sale is running 30 days and they will be adding new items to the catalog each day. I know your excited. Not only will there be new designs but also reprints of old favorites. There is something for everyone including that someone on your list that always gives you problems. I mean, who doesn't like t-shirts? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Re-Birth

Saks Fifth Avenue is ushering in its newly renovated 110,000-sq.-ft. New Orleans store at Canal Place—which was heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005—with a two-day celebration that will include a celebrity-attended Oscar de la Renta fashion show, a personal appearance by denim designers Chip and Pepper Foster of Chip & Pepper, and a gala for approximately 2,000 invited guests. Following the fashion show, Saks will host a party, themed after the city’s rich French history and its European beginnings, with catering provided by chef Emeril Lagasse. The opening events will support five New Orleans charities, including the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), New Orleans Museum of Art, Contemporary Arts Center, Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium, and Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans. The following day, Saks will host a meet-and-greet with local citizens and customers in the morning, followed by a formal ribbon cutting marking the official opening of the store, and the PA by Chip & Pepper. “Saks Fifth Avenue has been blessed with 23 years of success in New Orleans,” said Sadove. “Re-opening Saks at Canal Place gives us the opportunity to further serve our growing customer base here, and it marks another milestone in the comeback of this great city.”

Two Soles, One Body

Since ballet flats seem to have lasted another season at the height of fashion it seems only logical that one of the premier designers of flat shoes has opened a boutique in New York City. London Sole has just made it even easier to pick up their comfy, practical, and trendy shoes. Just call, 212-719-3001, or email lsballetnyc@aol.com to make an appointment so you can stop by their boutique! No browsing the web and waiting for the package to come in the mail just stop by and take your pick. Whatever you choose will be coming home with you. How very appropriate in this city of ours.

Black Friday

It's that time of year again! With Turkey Day a week away we all know that the biggest shopping day of the year is upon us. And while some people definitely avoid leaving their house for fear of being injured by a rampant shopper others, like myself, are out there scooping up the deals. Normally I would head out to NJ immediately after dinner and shop with V but since she will be working that day I have come up with another shopping plan of attack! The Midnight Madness Sale at Woodbury Commons, as well as, many of the other Premium Outlets throughout the country for that matter, just check the website. Make your list and check it twice then get your shop on.

Getting Down To Business

Sorry for all the problems yesterday. All I have to say about that is that, the new Blogger in beta still has some major kinks to be worked out and I think I'll wait till that's all resolved before I completely jump on the bandwagon. That being said... I have much news so get ready to read!

"Hey Marilyn"

I have a Pre-Gala cocktail reception to go to tonight at my museum. My job is so tough, isn't it? So, I decided I would wear one of my Monif C. convertible dresses because they are just so fabulous. Well, while I still say they are indeed fabulous give yourself at least a half an hour and if possible the assitance of another person to figure out how to tie the dress in a way that in complimentary to you. It looked great when I was done and I have gotten nothing but compliments so far (one woman keeps calling me Marilyn) but the effort was much more than I expected. Hopefully, I will pick up some tricks at Curvy Girls Night Out.

It's That Time Of Year Again!!

I am SO freakin' excited because it is time again for Monif C.'s Curvy Girls Night Out, November 17th! I already have my VIP tix and you should purchase yours immediatly because they are almost sold out. Why, you ask. Well, because of all the fabulous things that status entails like a VIP Fashion Show featuring the Holiday 2006 Collection & Spring 2007 Collection Preview, 6 hours of complimentary cocktails while you shop, first access to SHOP the Monif C. styles and one-of-a-kind pieces made specially for the show at 10-50% off, an ADDITIONAL $25 gift certificate to use during the event, complimentary beauty treatments by sponsoring spas, a gift bag chockfull of free products, and giveaways, plus celebrity guests and many more treats to be announced! And if by the time you get this message they are already sold out, don't worry about it because the regular priced tickets are just about as good and can also be purchased at the door. Where is this door you ask? The West Side Loft 336 W. 37th Street. on the 6th Floor, see you there.

Wandering Off The Beaten Path

I am going to take a step away from fashion for a minute to comment on an email that I received earlier today. Neiman Marcus sent out a notice informing people that the new Tom Ford fragrance "Black Orchid" (very Anita in West Side Story) is available for purchase exclusively on the website. Now here's my question: why would anyone spend $600.00 on a perfume that they cannot even smell or test? Seriously.

New Jewelry

While at Culture Fest I recieved a free copy of Ins and Outs LIC Magazine. While flipping through I came across an advertisement for some really cute jewelry... Now, I know that with jewelry everything after a while really starts to look the same but this caught my eye and I had to investigate. And my findings are fabulous! Calico Juno Designs is not only unique but made to order gold or silver on pretty much all designs, as well as, what type of stone for some is at your discretion and the prices for what your getting are more than reasonable. I'm definitially getting my shop on while I work...

Everyone Wants Some

Apparently the whole rasta trend has reached everything in fashion from Dior, to L.A.M.B. and now Lacoste! I was in shock this morning when browsing through and I found little alligator sneakers with a red, yellow, and green theme, or as they call it "folk". I can't believe that super preppy polo and white tenny-shoe Lacoste is embracing widespread trends to this extreme. What's next?

Victorian Me

This style of boots have been popping up all over the place and I can't help but want to take them home with me. Maybe it's just the primp and proper lady in me wanting some representation or perhaps it's just the fact that they kick ass! Either way one thing it clear, I have to have them. Pennies going in the jar as I type...

Ethical Fashion

Beyond Skin is an exclusive ethical footwear label producing beautiful, classic, hand-made shoes. Founded in 2001, this line was created in response to the challenging predicament of combining style and fashion with a cruelty-free lifestyle. In the past, attempts to combine fashion and ethics have generally resulted in one side of the equation being sacrificed. Beyond Skin has produced a classic - yet unique - collection of vegan shoes that are produced in a manner that is non-exploitative to animals or humans and - wherever possible - the greater environment. This trans-seasonal, made-to-order footwear takes its cue from developing trends (tale these boots as an example) and is set to continually evolve. Beyond Skin endeavors to support a sustainable lifestyle rather than the throwaway culture that is an inherent part of our modern day lives. An admirable yet difficult endeavor. But, the people at Beyond Skin are delivering on these fronts. Everything from the leather alternative materials, to the packaging and promotional materials are eco-friendly and fabulous. Fashion and ethics do not have to be mutually exclusive!

It's A Good Thing?

Martha Stewart is really to trying to branch out with the introduction of some fashion-centric guests. as opposed to the standard gardener, craft maven, or chef. Next week, The Martha Stewart Show will broadcast segments of her trip to the Paris couture shows this past July. Among the segments to air are a visit to Coco Chanel’s home and a quick chat with Karl Lagerfeld at his studio before the Chanel show. The real climax, however, will be the November 17 episode featuring Valentino in the studio with Stewart in New York. According to a show publicist, Valentino will tape the episode three days prior. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Valentino's top-secret, family Thanksgiving turkey recipe, it's a good thing.

Coach Makes Everything!

From bags, (of course) to shoes, scarves, keychains, cell phone dangles, gloves, sunglasses, scarves, luggage, baby goodies, etc. Coach really does have a very varied groups of products for us fashionistas to enjoy. Now, there is just a bit more. Coach has released a line of jewelry in conjunction with it's 65th Anniversary collection. Just a couple of bagnles and baubles to flaunt our signature C's. Check out the collection and take your pick but keep in mind there will be more released in mid-November, just in time for the holidays.

Pre-Order Jeffrey

Since I doubt anyone is going to be able to make it to Cali to pick up Jeffrey's much anticipated line of clothes you'll be glad to know that the store that brings California girls (and boys) looks from Charlotte Ronson, Ella Moss, Jovovich Hawk, and Mayle is luring both coasts to its newly re-launched website with a few fashion exclusives such as Jeffrey's collection which you can pre-order because it doesn't hit the stores until March. "We've carried Jeffrey's line, Cosa Nostra, from the beginning—before all the hype," said women's buyer John Eshaya. "We thought doing this pre-order would be a great way to support him, as the winner of Project Runway and as a local L.A. designer." And, if shall be but, not only for Jeffrey for all the other great designers that are featured on the site because they will get great exposure. Go look now, they will not dissapoint.

Revisiting The Classics

As a girlie girl who still plays video games and watches cartoons (yeah, that's right) I got all warm and fuzzy inside when I saw these. They remind me of Archie comic books where the girls were always unbelivably coodinated and envy inspiring. If the cold weather hadn't just swooped down on us with avengence I would totally pick these up but I guess I'll have to wait for next summer. But, that doesn't mean you should... if you want them here they are.

In The Spirit Of Halloween

Just in case I have died of fright I'll get this out of the way. So funny...

First And Foremost

Target's Go:International line is bringing us more with the new release of Behnaz Sarafpour's line of clothing. And they say "international" but for us city girls this line is right at home coming straight from and inspired by the city that never sleeps. I think that this is probably one of the most comprehensive lines that has been released yet not to mention consistent. I can't wait to get my shop on!

Make Your Own Tiffany's

Tiffany & Co. has just launched a make-your-own-necklace line by Elsa Peretti, perhaps on of the few ways to afford jewelry by the iconic designer. Start with a sterling-silver, gold, or platinum chain and add as many heart-shaped charms made from semiprecious stones and minerals as you wish. They range from $100 to $450. Forward this post over to your lover just in time for the holidays, I'm sure they will get the hint. And to make it super easy on them, they can buy everything here without having to get up out of their chair.

For V...

Sephora’s got beauty and brains in the bag as we will see this November with the debut of Monopoly: Sephora Edition. Here's the twist, this time only beauty rules apply: players go to jail for bad hair days, advance to go for getting a manicure, pay fines for streaky self tanner application, and purchase products with beauty bucks. When players own an entire cosmetic category, they can place Sephora shopping bags on their properties and eventually upgrade to Sephora stores; they can also get ahead by stocking their stores with the most beauty products. Lending their names to the whimsical game are some of the industry’s top beauty brands. There’s Stila in Gloss Gardens, Make Up For Ever on Lipstick Lane, Nars on Cheek Street, Murad at Cleanser Crossing, and Bliss on Lotion Avenue. And with a retail price tag of around $45 I'm sure it will be on every little (and big) fashionista's Christmas list along with a few designer Barbies.

End Of An Era

Ok, I have taken my one week of mourning since the season finale of Project Runway. I couldn't be happier with the face that Jeffrey won, I think that he and Uli really did have strong shows and the judges were spot on with those decisions in the end. I suppose I should't be that upset I can still peek into the lives of Laura, Mychael, Jeffrey, and Uli whenever I feel like it instead of having to rush home after class. Or, better yet we can all start working on your own collection for the Season 4 casting calls...

For Alex...

With Uniqlo's much anticipated, New York 36,000 square foot flagship store opening next month it makes sense that this brand is on everyone's mind. And it still will be even after the dust from this launch settles becuause they have invited women’s wear designers Philip Kim, Alice Roi, Tina Lutz and Marcia Patmos of Lutz & Patmos, Kino, and GVGV, and men’s wear designers Halb, Satoru Tanaka, and Alexandre Plokhov of Cloak to each design capsule collections of eight looks for Spring/Summer 2007. Each of the eight designers’ creations will be showcased for one month each throughout the new year. “This project is yet another way to introduce Uniqlo’s unique balance of high style, high quality merchandise at affordable prices. We are extremely excited for this important project for Spring 2007,” says Nobuo Domae, Uniqlo’s U.S. CEO. It just keeps getting better, doesn't it?

If Only I was 6 Years Old Again

It’s never too soon to learn how to dress! Now fashionistas-in-training can start early with their own Diane Von Furstenberg Barbie. Diane really is everywhere... True to the spirit of Diane’s working-girl roots and signature style, the doll wears a hot pink wrap dress and carries a newspaper, passport, and suitcase so she can jet-set off to new adventures. As for the already blooming fashionistas, we’ll be able to jet-set to a new outfit this December, when Diane releases a grown-up version of the hot pink wrap dress to celebrate her new toy at Bloomingdale’s. Christmas for everyone! And while searching for this Barbie on the Mattell website I came across a the Badgely Mischka Barbie as well. Little girls are getting more fashion than I would have know what to do with at that age. Cute and scary all at the same time.

I'm Famous

Not really but I am on one of the people who is being featured on fashmatch.com with their launch of a new and improved way to shop online. I'm in the little testimonial section on the right and am randomly circulated among the other people who gave their opinions as well and I thought there would be a little more of a mention concerning She Spys The Buys but hey, we can't win them all. One of the newer features that I really liked is the fact that you can easily add items that are not already included in the selections to make the best outfits for yourself.

Granny Shoes?

Whenever anyone says Easy Spirit to me I think of the kind of shoes that my mother would wear to work as the wonderful school teacher that she is. That is, until now. Tara Subkoff, founder of Imitation of Christ, has designed a line of shoes for Easy Spirit that defintially not my mother's shoe! Flats, sandals, pumps, boots; a shoe for every occasion in a wide variety of colors. You can shop the entire collection online and take your pick before they take off.

Lazy Saturdays... Kinda

So I'm not at work, as you can see but I am definitally working, doing some super early or long over due spring cleaning. Comfy fleece pants I stole from my bf and a vintage Wizard of Oz t-shirt are what I'm rocking as I sashay around with my broom and my duster (of course.)Speaking of t-shirts. Thanks to Alex I now have yet another great t-shirt site to throw money at. Dirty Microbe had a small selection of fun graphic t's that make me chuckle. Best laugh was this, for me at least... what's yours?

Ooh La La

After spending much of my life undergoing a rigerous parochial education I was for a long time disinclined to wear skirts for fun. After the skirt being part of a uniform for 8 years one looks to embrace the more masculine side of fashion. And I did! But more recently I have found myself gravitating back to dresses and skirts with a desire I didn't think possible. Lucky for me I stumbled across Boutique Ooh La La. They have one of the best selections of skirts that I have ever seen, orignal in design and color pallette with looks for every occassion.

Belt It Out

For a long time I have been very "anti-belt" mostly just because I don't like to have attention drawn to my waist. Very recently, however, I have started to embrace the belt because the new styles are so cute, not neccesarily meant to be worn around the waist, and seriously who really likes their pants to be falling down? It seems the folks over at Ecoist got that vibe because they have recently released a line of belts that are just too cute. And, if you really want to be super coordinated you can probably find a bag of sorts that matches. Super coordinated and super hero! Saving the earth one purchase at a time.

Culture Fest

This blog is all about fashion but sometimes you have to look at the big picture. How about all the culture that influences our everyday lives (including fashion). Well, this weekend is a good chance to take a look at what NYC and it's cultural institutions have to offer at Culture Fest in Battery Park. You'll find me there perusing the booths and working, of course. How could the nation's largest maritime museum not be included? On Sunday one of my stops will the Bronx Council for the Arts tent (#27). From 11-5 a friend of mine, Elizabeth Oritz, will be there selling her beautiful jewelry and artwork. The original handmade designs and craftmanship are exquistise. Who knows, maybe you can meet the mind behind She Spys the Buys...

Everyone Go And Let Me Know How It Is!

Kappa Kappa Cappucino

Well I'll let you speculate as to what my locale is in reference too but I have to say I am dressed to impress no matter where that might be. Having a quasi-corporate job and the desire to dress in a more mature manner otherwise it was no surprise to me that I immediately reached for the NY&Co. that I had hanging in my closet when getting ready for this meeting tonight. Now, I know it is on the low scale of things but they do business basics well. Everything from chinos, to suits, to knit slacks, to button downs, sweaters, tunics, belts, jewelry, and even shoes and all for a reasonable price. I recently visited the downtown store out of sheer boredom having arrived in the Nassau St. area a bit early. Did you know they open at 7:00 in the AM? Yeah, neither did I! I began to wander and before I knew it my arms were full of chunky turtlenecks, belts, and "city knit" pants (or as I have labeled them "the best ass-pants ever!") Sufficet to say, I went to town and you should too. I don't know about the other locations but the NY&Co. on Nassau street off of Fulton is having a sale where awesome pants and cute shirts are $7.99, $9.99, or 50% off. So, tonight I am showing off some conquests from my shopping expedition; cute pants (of course), chunky floppy-neck turtleneck sweater from last years GAP winter collection, Steve Madden shoes, and Bulga bag. Wish me luck...
