Make You Own: Foot Scrub

What You Need:

8 strawberries
2 tablespoons of olive or safflower oil
1 teaspoon of kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon of almonds, finely chopped

How to Make It:

Mix and blend all the ingredients together to form a paste. Don't over blend. The strawberries have a lot of water in them and too much blending makes for a 'watery' paste. Massage it onto your feet, rinse off and dry your feet. Be careful with your massaging here because you don't want to grind almond bits into your skin. You can refrigerate any mixture that is leftover. Shelf life is about a week.

The Roundup: 3 Months

Having completed the first three months of this personal style challenge I am in a mood to reflect on what has transpired so far. I feel that I have been (and will continue to be) successful in my initial goals of not repeating outfits but, also showing myself and others that you can make great things with what you already have not just "make-do." In the past three months I have worn 57 different outfits to work; 49 different tops, 6 dresses, 14 skirts, 14 pairs of pant like things (slacks, bermudas, capris, gauchos, etc) and 3 pairs of jeans. Although I'm not really counting them in the outfit as a whole I have used 26 pairs of shoes, 10 necklaces, 19 pairs of earrings, 1 bracelet, and 11 handbags to spice up my outfits. If you do the math you might ascertain that here are some individual pieces that I have worn more than once and that is ok! In fact, that is kind of the point...

I've answered a few reader questions. Please feel free to ask more! I have also shared a few choice weekend looks with you! Is that something that you would like to see more of moving forward?

260 Days, No Repeats has helped me see the potential in my wardrobe and being part of this "blog-o-sphere" has inspired me tremendously. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to check out what I wear, read what I write, and leave me comments! I'm like a kid a Christmas when my BB beeps with an email and I see it's something from one of you! I am also inspired by the challenges that people undertake themselves, as well as, pose to this blogging community. In the first three months I participated in 3 style challenges and even tried for one of my own. Many thanks to Frances Joy of Mad Dress Game for joining me!

This challenge has also helped me curb my spending! I was not a crazy shopaholic but, I had my moments... I found it most difficult to turn down a great deal only to get home and realize that I had something exactly like what I had purchased in my closet or that even though it was a great deal I didn't really love it and therefore didn't use it. That was all money (which is tight for everyone these days) down the drain. In the past three months I have spent $46.00 on clothes and accessories and each one of those things is something I really wanted, still really like, and have used.

One thing that I feel I haven't done a great job of demonstrating as I had wanted to is the use value of my clothing. I would have loved to keep track like some other bloggers do but, to be honest some of my clothes are so old I don't remember when I bought them or how much they were. I will say though you can see that some items (especially the accessories) are used very frequently and naturally have higher use value.

Overall, I am so happy with how things are going to far and really hope that I can keep it up heading twoards the 6 month mark! If there is anything new you would like see please let me know. Again thanks so much for supporting and motivating me, you're the best!!

Question: Where Can I Find Eco-Friendly Interview Clothes?

As I have mentioned before I work in HR and in my time functioning as a Recruiter I have seen alot of hilarious resumes and cover letters, met some "interesting" people, and gotten a good amount of questions. One of the more difficult questions was posed to me by a college student at a job fair. I remember complimenting her on her suit (I feel as thought those people are more serious about their search. First impressions, people!) then we proceeded to discuss a greening initiative that she had worked on at former internship listed on her resume... standard job fair stuff. The two topics melded together and we talked about the accessibility of eco-friendly products and clothing made out of organic/sustainable materials which led her to the questions, "Where can a college student on a budget get an eco-friendly interview outfit?"

To be honest, I was a little stumped... OK fine, really stumped! There are lots of places to buy eco-friendly products made out of organic materials or repurposed items but, where are all the suits? Either way, I was hard pressed to find anything particularly affordable in the standards of a college budget. My best solution: thrifting!! I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner. That should be the answer to all of life's issues.

You can get a beautiful suit that someone was tired of or doesn't fit into anymore for a small fraction of the price. More importantly, I don't think I've ever seen a suit in a thrift store that cost more than $25! If you don't have one of the big name thrift stores by you you can shop Goodwill online or smaller consignment shops. Anyway you go about it there is a gigantic potential there to find what you are searching for at an affordable price if you take the time to look. Plus, it keeps those discarded clothes out of landfills.

1 tablespoon white unscented lotion

adjust to the amount of skin you want to cover

How to Make It
Mix the lotion and cocoa powder together until very smooth and creamy. Apply with a sponge or makeup wedge.

600 - Splurge vs. Budget: One Shoulder Romper

It seems appropriate that one of the landmark posts (600th, YAY) of She Spys The Buys would be about more affordable clothing options.... Let's talk about trendy rompers and one shoulder styles. I don't think I would personally buy this because rompers don't work for everyone, AKA me but, for some they are a really great summer style. The one on the right is a silk ABS by Allen Schwartz selling at Neiman Marcus for the "sale" price of $231.00 marked down from $385.00... I love the casual glamour of this romper especially the fabulous shoulder detail but the price is not very realistic for those of us on a budget! Thankfully, I came across this practically identical affordable option at JCPenny. Although it is not made of the same luxurious silk it is the exact same shape and style compelte with beautiful shoulder detail all for $39.99 marked down from $60.00! Perfect for a night out on the town with the girls or a hot date...

A new project has launched in NYC’s Garment District! Remeber the painted cows that were all over Manhattan a few years ago? Well, the The Fashion Center Sideawalk Catwalk is bringing that vibe back with 32 designers who have custom designed Ralph Pucci mannequins as part of a public-art installation put together by the Fashion Center Business Improvement District. Make Your Own: Face Scrub

Gentle Facial Exfoliating Scrub

This is a very inexpensive scrub made from basic kitchen ingredients and a touch of lavender.

Yields: 16 ounces of scrub
Application: Use three times a week
Storage: Plastic or glass container; Store in a dark, cool place for best results
Shelf life: 6 months

What You Will Need:

1 cup ground oatmeal
1/2 cup dry lavender flowers, stripped of stalks (optional)
1/2 cup powdered soy milk
2 teaspoons cornmeal
Filtered water

How to Make It:

Mix all of the "dry" ingredients in a bowl and transfer to a container with a lid.

How to Use It:

When you are ready to use, combine 1 tablespoon of your scrub with enough filtered water to form a thick paste. Gently massage in circular motions over your face and neck. Rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry.

Look at that. You found your own little scrub of youth.

Make-Your-Own Hairspray
If you’re looking for something truly natural with light hold, the Light Lemon and Orange Hairspray will do the trick. It’s easier to make than bread and butter and will last you for about a week. Pump it and tame that mane all day long, girl.

What You Will Need:

A spray bottle
2 lemons
2 oranges

Directions:

Cut the lemons and oranges into slices, and combine in a small pan. Add three cups of water. Boil on low heat for about 30 minutes, adding more water if necessary. Strain water and cool for 15 minutes. Place the liquid in the spray bottle and keep in the refrigerator.

Since there are no preservatives, spray will last for about a week. Keep some lemons and oranges on hand and you got yourself a refill.

As I have said before I am trying not to shop as much and work with what I already have in my closet. For example: my favorite cuffed stretchy pants from New York and Company. Unfortunately there is a problem with these pants (in all colors except black, wierd) when I bought them they fit perfectly but, after a few washes they shrunk and in the strangest way. I can still fit into them no problem but, if I wear the at my waist-ish area they are wayyy too short. At first I had disillusioned myself into thinking that the almost flood length pants were fine the way they were and continued to wear them. After some funny looks from people I realized that I was sooo wrong!

When I noticed my co-worker Patricia wearing the same exact pants that I owned (and was going to donate) I mentioned that she should be careful how she washed them because they were notorious for shrinkage and she nodded knowingly pointing out that fact that she had had the same problem and had taken the cuffs down. I hadn't even noticed her INGENIOUS fix at first glance! So I have decided to undertake that project and I took a few pictures. I think it's going along quite well don't you? When I wash/iron them the fold of the former cuffs won't be as noticable. Thanks Patricia!! This is a perfect example of doing what you can with what you have.

It has taken long enough but, Coach has released a bag this spring that I am actually in LOVE with! I used to be a huge fan of their classic but, sometimes quirky style and I purchased enough of it from them that I used to get those customer appreciation 20% off coupons... yes, I had a problem but, I digress.

Point being, recently I had I fallen out of love with Coach because at some juncture I looked at their products and didn't really see where the classic but, sometimes quirky style had gone. It felt like they were trying too hard as they re-designed the classic C on some bags and released the mostly fabric Poppy collection. I don't know what they were thinking!!!

But, they are getting back on the right track with this bag! While the shape is great I am also really liking the fact that although there is some embroidery. It is subtle and almost needs a second glance. Also, the ivory/eggshell color works perfectly into a spring wardrobe. I don't like the giant shiny silver Coach tag because that looks a little China Town to me but, either way I would carry that bag all the time! Hopefully just enough people don't feel the same way so that there is a glimmer of hope that I will be able to find this at the outlet (since $498 is a little rich for my now responsible self)but, I honestly doubt it...

I was shocked to hear about the controversy surrounding a new Lane Bryant Cacique commercial. It seems to be on the back burner in the news but, you can read more about how FOX and ABC refuse to play the ad because it shows to much cleavage? See the original commercial that they banned.

Yeah after the smut that runs on FOX... and on top of the fact that they are airing the new Victoria's Secret commercial for The Nakeds! It makes me think that maybe they are not very accepting of a normal looking woman and that is sad since more women in America are rubenesque as opposed to waifish. How do you feel about this?

It's Not Easy Being Green - Happy Earth Day 2010

How are you celebrating Earth Day? This was my small contribution twoards the movement... If you are thinking of shopping green you should check out this guide, summarized below. Not everything is what it seems when it comes to green as most companies have started green-washing their images to fool the public. One of my fav eco shopping sites is ecoist and right now they are offering 20% off any item for Earth Day. Lots of retailers are offering discounts to help out the earth, check them out here and have HAPPY EARTH DAY!

Vegetarian / Animal Free: products that have been made without the use of leather or animal tissue products. Examples are shoes and bags made from “vegetal leather” using Amazonian rubber instead of animal skins or other recycled or man-made materials.

Ethically Produced: Ethical fashion is fashion that has been produced with respect for people and the environment. Although there are existing certifications for Organic and Fair Trade, we want to encourage companies who are taking significant action but don’t qualify for certification. This might include companies producing locally or on small scales in developed countries, who might not qualify for Fair Trade certification or companies working with farmers to transition to sustainable crops but who might not yet qualify as Organic (which takes a few years). The “Ethic Chic” section of each brand profile should have details on the specific steps of the brand’s ethical production.

Craft / Artisan: products that have been crafted using artisan skills such as embroidery, which preserve the perpetuation of ancestral traditions.

Custom or Tailor-made: also called demi-couture or made-to-order. This is a way of encouraging quality and “slow fashion” over mass-produced disposable fashion.

Fair Trade Certified: an organized movement that promotes standards for international labor (such as reasonable work hours, no child labor, the right to unionize, a fair living wage), environmentalism, and social policy in areas related to production of goods. Fair Trade focuses on exports from developing countries to developed countries. Some Fair Trade certification organizations include: FLO www.fairtrade.net, IFAT www.ifat.org, TransFair (Canada and US) www.transfairusa.org and www.transfair.ca.

Organic: natural fibers that have been grown without any pesticides and other toxic materials, preserving the health of humans and the environment. The process of organic growth can be certified by various organizations.

J.Crew Group Inc. has just announced that Lyons, formerly creative director, has been promoted to executive creative director for J.Crew, and she will receive a $325,000 bonus. This comes six months after Lyons received a $1 million bonus, which was awarded on the condition that she must pay it back in full should she leave J.Crew within 2 years or pay back in half should she exit the brand in 4 years.

While we are talking about swim season here's a tip on how to save money (and the environment) by making your own shaving cream!

Ingredients:

1/2 teaspoon sunflower oil
1/4 cup unscented glycerin soap
Double broiler
A cup or mug

In your double boiler, melt chunks of the glycerin soap. Stir in the sunflower oil. Move the mixture into a mug as soon as all of the glycerin chunks are melted. The “cream” will set quickly. When you’re ready to shave, simply work water against the soap until a lather builds and apply.

Swimsuit season is upon us and I could not be more unhappy... I LOVE the warm weather but, there is something about putting on next to nothing and walking around that makes me less than happy. Maybe it's that fact that it's socially unacceptable to wear such little clothes in most other day to day activities so I'm not used to it? I'll keep working on the reason but, I think I found a great swimsuit option which makes me much less unhappy about the whole prospect. The ShapeFX All-Over Control (because that's what I need) Bandeau Suit.

It has a power-mesh lining controls all over, the shirred overlay slims and defines torso, and the sweetheart neckline emphasizes bust! I'm not a giant fan of the color but, peridot is my birthstone.... If you are going to go for it I recommend sizing appropriately or up because the power-mesh lining is no joke. I bought a dress from them that was on the smaller side of things and I swear I thought I was going to suffocate. Right now this (and most other) suits on the site are less expensive then they would normally be because they are doing a preseason sale so if you are interested I would pick it up. Take the plunge...

Hair Saver

I have pretty difficult hair to deal with... I know everyone says that but, seriously it is. I have relatively thick hair which used to be down to my mid back and very curly but, had recently been cropped short to my chin and straightened. Either way it is somewhat dry and frizzy and for the better portion of my life I have tried product after product to make it more soft, shiny, and generally manageable. For a while it was Sebastian Laminates Drops and Detangling Milk but, those became unavailable in stores and I was again stuck searching for a way to deal with my hair.

The end of my quest came to me as a free sample with an order from Sephora: Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment! My hair had been a bit brittle since the Keratin and no matter what I put in it vaguely resembled straw so when I read that I could use this product as an overnight deep conditioning treatment I gave it a whirl and I was hooked!! My hair went from brittle and dry to shiny, soft, and smooth and we've been together ever since. You can also use Ojon as a leave in conditioner and to tame loose fly aways. I will warn you it has an odd smell like chocolate and something else weird but, you won't notice it once it's in your hair.

I recommend if you're going to try it out get the smaller size because you really don't need much to achieve the kind of amazing results I'm talking about. I picked it up from Sephora about a year ago and am still using the same one. So on top of being effective and amazing it's economical too! If you're feeling really adventurous you can try their full line of products. I have been toying the idea of the dry shampoo. If I pick it up I will let you know how it turns out...

Che Target has everything a girl could want right now including a new capsule collection with Zac Posen launching nationwide on April 25th. Luckily for the people living in NYC they will have 24 hours to shop the collection 10 days early (April 15th @ 11pm - April 16th @ 11pm) at a pop up shop located at 481 8th Avenue (at 34th Street) The whole 24 hours thing is definately a first... The event will channel the ambiance of a party, with the temporary shop offering the entire collection not just certain pieces like past shops. I know that certain sizes will sell out quickly, so if you see something you want in the lookbook stay up late or get up early to indulge!

While checking out the clearance dress section I came across this one which I have instantly fallen in love with both for it's style and it's price. Among her many accolades, Cynthia Vincent is the designer behind one of last summer's "it" shoe, the towering, zip-front Luella wedge sandal. It has staying power for sure because the Luella is destined to be super hot this summer, too, for it's leg-lengthening, wear-with-everything brilliance. I have started a second blog called 260 Days, No Repeats. Don't worry I'm not abandoing you! I will still be posting the deals and steals that I find but, will also be talking about something slightly more practical. Because I have a pretty ridiculous amount of clothes, shoes, and accessories and I really need to put them all to good use. My goal with this is not to show off how much clothes I have or even that I can put a stylish outfit together. It is simply to show myself and others that you can make great things with what you already have not just "make-do" You don't have to go to the store and buy a whole new outfit for an event (even though that is fun) you might be able to find a dress in your closet with the tags still on it (yes, that has happened to me). And for all those times that you throw up you hands and say, "I have nothing to wear!!" I want to show that you probably do have something you haven't seen all the potential in the things you already own. Another thing that I want to show myself, and I suppose everyone could learn from it, is the use-value of my clothes (ex: basic black ballet flats that cost $12.99 are much more valuable than a prom dress that costs $199.99) I can agree that there are basic pieces that should be of higher quality because you will wear them more but, the trendy stuff that you could pay a fortune store in designer boutiques is better purchased somewhere like Target because it will be out of style next season.

Just a reminder that The Garden Collection by H&M (the company's first fully-sustainable line) officially launches TODAY in H&M stores nationwide. This is under H&M's first collection made entirely from environmentally adapted materials (including organic cotton, organic linen and recycled polyester), and is made up of 80 items and 10 accessories all under $60. This weekend I went shopping with a friend to find her the perfect dress for a night out in NYC you know: drinks, dinner at Mesa Grill, dancing after... the whole nine. We went from store to store unable to find anything that would suit the bill when really we should have just hit up one of our favorite places to shop, Nordstrom Rack, in the first place.

While she found a bunch of awesome and budget dress possibilities I wandered around looking for something for myself and came across a whole bunch of racks with trouser jeans!! I know, I couldn't believe it either. While the brand (Not Your Daughter's Jeans) was not what I had originally envisioned they are a great wash, decent fit (although a higher rise than I'm used to) and almost $70.00 off the original retail!!! How could I turn that down especially when my boyfriend was footing the bill?

If you are searching for trouser jeans and are not near the Nordstrom Rack in White Plains (where there are still tons of awesome jeans) like I was you can check out an alternative that I was seriously considering but, had not a chance to try on. These Trouser Dark Wash Jeans from Banana Republic are also a good fit but, unfortunately carry a hefty price tag. I'm glad I was able to avoid it this time but, since it's what I wanted I probably would have paid it... they are spot on.

Here are 20 things you can rock out for spring that you probably have in your closet already if you had jumped on the trend bandwagon when they first arose. I'll admit I didn't so there are some gaps but, making it work with what I have sounds great to me.

1. Statement Necklace - One trend I love is the statement necklace. Ubiquitous for the past few seasons, it's the quickest way to make your outfit pop.

2. Boyfriend Blazer - Last season's must-buy, the boyfriend blazer, still looks fresh layered over dresses and skirts, or paired with jeans and shorts.

3. Belts - Thick or thin, belts continue their run as an important accessory, instantly transforming virtually anything in your wardrobe. Wear yours to cinch cardigans, jackets, t-shirts, blouses, dresses and more.

4. Florals - A top trend for more than 4 years in a row florals for spring always look fresh.

I've been wearing glasses or contacts since I was in the second grade... paying for years to make my eyes do what they are supposed to. It's total BS if you ask me! Lucky for me I've come across www.warbyparker.com where some genius has cornered the market on affordable (yet attractive) eye wear for the vision impaired. Head the site and browse the collection of 27 not-too-modern styles in a plethora of different colors. You can also upload a photo of yourself, and try out different looks from the collection. New Color For Spring

We have all been looking for way to save money here and there which might include frosting your own tips (nails not hair). But, with spring coming it is time to consider a polish other than Wicked to make your nails pop in the warmer weather. Enter new Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure. While I wouldn't be brushing it on without a base or top coat this new formula makes do it yourself manicures a breeze.

There are a plethora of colors to pick from but, my choices from the line besides the sheer nude-ish shades are Commander in Chic and Pat on the Black. The latter is fine for riding out the rest of the chilly weather but, not very spring appropriate. While, Commander in Chic is all the rave among fashionistas everywhere for spring 2010.

What I really appreciate about vintage shops (or even the plain old salvation army) is that you can find some awesome items and keep them out of landfills because some fabrics will live longer than you will. Has anyone seen Wall-E?!? But, I digress...

Also, try not to buy unless you are sure of your size because the return policy is generally no returns. This is one of my biggest problems with shopping online in general. Capsule Collection: Sonia Rykiel pour H&M

H&M is doing well despite recent bad press. Hennes & Mauritz AB (full professional business name) posted a 20.9 percent increase in net profit in the fourth quarter, with a 15 percent increase in sales in December 2009 versus the previous year, and a 13 percent increase in sales in January 2010.

Retail analysts expect that the jump will allow the company to reinvest in expanding its high-fashion offerings, like its recent collaborations with Jimmy Choo and Sonia Rykiel. On that note, if you loved the Sonia Rykiel lingere collection that H&M carried over the holidays then I'm sure you're counting down the days to the launch of her knitwear collection. Febuary 20 for those of you who are not...

I will admit although the lingere was super cute I was not moved to run and purchase it. This collection, however, is totally different! You can check it out at H&M but, definately watch the video! You'll get a great look at the thinking and collaboration that went into the collection. I learned I have been pronouncing her name wrong (embarrassed face). Also, you'll get a peek at the little yellow dress I am lusting over... hopefully it's not too expensive.

Project Runway: The Video Game?!

I'm just as shocked as you are but, it's true. On March 2 you'll be able to turn your living room into a catwalk, when Atari releases this new fierce video game exclusively for Wii. If you spent all last season watching the contestants thinking "I could do so much better than that," here's your chance. The game puts players in their roles, taking on theme challenges and designing the garments, getting their models dolled up with hair, makeup, and accessories, and eventually taking on the role of catwalk queen as they strut down the runway in their own creations (with the help of the Wii balance board, ick!). Tim Gunn, Nina Garcia, Michael Kors, and Heidi Klum are all part of the game as are the top eight contestants from last season (which I did not see boo Bravo). The game also has "an interactive garment studio" and "a feature where the player can take part in high-profile fashion shoots and take on the role of a fashion photographer." I remember when I thought rain boots were the coolest...

I think I was still in the single digits of age and I was totally into jumping around in puddles and making a splash. There was a hiatus until later on (as an adult) I will admit I purchased a pair of really snazzy Coach ones but, have not worn them in literally years. What is a girl to do when she's searching for a way to keep her feet dry that does not involve a rubber knee high boot. Enter these totally awesome rain booties! Totally chic... I think they would look fabulous with tights and some skirts or slacks. They are a little pricey so I'm going to be searching for a cheaper alternative but, if this works for you I would totally get them and keep your feet dry in style!

I love T-Shirts but, when you work a 9-5 HR gig a flashy t-shirt with an awesome message just doesn't cut it for everyday wear. Enter J Crew's Textured Jersey Ribboned Collier Tee.

This is the perfect work t-shirt because of the intricate beading and sequined design on the front and continued embellishment on the back. I have already purchased it and worn it to work and no one was the wiser. I fooled them all with my really fancied up cotton tee! As a word of advice, it is very thin so you busty girls want a good bra or a thin tank top underneath. Coming this spring Spanx will be making swimwear! Exciting, I know. Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't think of it sooner! Everyone is talking about the trends for spring and the uncommonly warm weather has definatly had me thinking about it as well.

A lighter colored scarf is definately on my list because I love them. I saw this while I was in the mall today and I liked this scarf. Love the ombre, love the color, love love love it.

I know I don't need anymore shoes but, when I saw these all I could think was what an amazing punch they would add to my spring/summer ensembles. Don't you agree? If you do you can pre-order them here... and then I will be jealous.

As the first major chill begins to set in I can't help but thinking of ways to keep myself toasty. Sure, I can bundle up in a goose down parka and wait out the winter but, I feel there has to be a better way. Enter a new collection of fleece-lined products called Plush, a collection that includes leggings, tights, knee-high, thigh highs, all with a thin fleece lining (the packaging is made of partially recycled paper, btw.) Looking at them, you can’t tell they are any thicker than regular hosiery, yet the difference is immediately felt once you venture outside. Although they are a little thicker in the foot area, you can still manage to easily slip on any heels, and be off! Priced from $22-$70, the items at Plush can easily be worth the invest, and I have a feeling you won’t be able to wash the items fast enough for the amount you’ll be wearing them! So long, paper-thin leggings!

Do It Yourself

Maybe you are the make everything yourself type, or perhaps you prefer to pick it up at the store... either way, you don't need to be Martha Stewart to use this recipe! Stray away from the chemical additives in normal lipgloss and make your own. This beautiful shade will take you through the end of fall and carry you through winter in style!

Beet Lip Gloss
10 minutes; makes 1/2 ounce

What You Need:
(local and organic whenever possible)

1 beet (light-colored red beets yield a red shade; darker ones get you a merlot color)
3 drops olive oil
2 Tbsp powdered sugar
1 capsule of vitamin E oil
Repurposed lip gloss container or pillbox

Directions:

1. Remove beet from stem, wash, and chop into 1-inch pieces.

2. Place chopped beet in microwave-safe container and heat on high for 1 minute until it releases juice.

3. Pour beet juice and the rest of the ingredients in a small bowl and mix thoroughly (add sugar by the teaspoon until it reaches your desired thickness).

4. Empty the finished blend into a small jar, preferably a repurposed lip gloss container. Let the mixture sit for 2-3 hours to thicken, then apply as you like. It'll keep for 6-8 months.

We should all go see the Design for a Living World exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt. I'm planning my weekend around it right now. It shows how 10 top designers put their pins and needles on sustainable materials and made beautiful things. Check out Kate Spade's woven totes with FSC-certified hardwood handles and jipijapa, a fun-to-say fiber made from palm leaves; Isaac Mizrahi's salmon-leather shoes, made with re-purposed materials and fewer toxic chems than regular leather; and Ted Muehling's veg-ivory jewelry, like bangles and earrings, carved from ivory-nut palm tree seeds.
